Man, I can't tell you how wonderful it is to see some quality fanart of this character, especially the original 70's version! What always made the black orchid so cool to me anyway, was just she combined the best of both worlds. She had the brilliant deductive mind of Batman & with all of Superman's incredible powers(super-strength, speed, flight, invulnerability, etc...). And just the fact that she was a woman who could all these amazing things, while also being a completely original character all of her own & not just a female clone of either of the two. Honestly, I think she's a much better role model than Wonder Woman, but again, that's just me
I also really loved how, at least in her very first appearances, she was about the only superpowered being in her world, like there weren't any other super heroes or villains & she just went using her awesome powers to punch in the face of some lowly crook or thug. Frankly, I really don't get just why she's as obscure as she is. I guess it may be to with the fact that since she didn't really have a rogues gallery, any weaknesses or even a supporting cast backstory or secret identity to speak of, they just thought she-d be a very dull character. But to be, that's what makes her such a great character. She's a very mysterious person. Your'e never sure who; or even what she's actually meant to be. She'd always infiltrate some criminal gang, & then when you'd least expect it, spring up out of nowhere & royally hand the criminal's asses, all while they struggle in vain to drive her away as their puny bullets would effortlessly bounce right off her gorgeous, invulnerable, lavender frame.
Anyway, thanks a bunch for drawing his dude, really. In fact, I actually have a group on Deviantart called BLACKORCHIDFC, & if it's alright with you I would very much like to put this in one of the fanart galleries.
Wow, I'm glad you like the piece. I didn't know a thing about the character before last week. When I was asked to do it, I read a little about her and, indeed, she was quite a unique character in her lack of an alter-ego and background story, especially coupled with her considerable complement of powers.
I don't know how to put the piece in the gallery, but if that's something you can do as a group member, be my guest!
I always think it'd be awesome if she had all-star Superman powers, minus the weakness to Kryptonite, & the series itself was written as a sort of urban/crime mystery thriller with some black/sex comedy touches, where she'd use her fantastic powers & crime solving to infiltrate criminal gangs or corrupt businesses & governments & screw them over. All while effortlessly alluding the authorities & the media. Also, she should be in her own universe where she's the only metahuman being like in her very first appearances in Adventure comics.
She actually some pretty impressive feats of strength other than her invulnerability to bullets. Like this:grimborster.tripod.com/bo2.jpg, & especially this:grimborster.tripod.com/bo8.jpg. That's what I really love about The Black Orchid, even though she operates like Batman, she has all this immense raw power that she uses as well to handle small time crooks, which is really very interesting. You'd think someone with that strength would use her power to try & affect the world on a much grander scale, but then again, that's what's so awesome about her. You're never really sure of her true motives. She just comes & goes as she pleases. Heck in issue 31 of the Super Friends, a supervillian actually does mistake her for a Kryptonian!
