A few years ago I was doing a lot of ActionScript programming and considering going into the online game business. I had no illusions about making a career of it, it was just something I thought I might like to do as a hobby. I never took it any further than programming a derivative of Asteroids
(the ne plus ultra
of early video games, IMO). I did, however, come up with a company name and logo when, for one reason or another, I was looking at pictures of uakari monkeys one day and thought, hey, uakari rhymes with Atari, and George Opperman’s “Fuji” logo goes right on that platyrrhine nose! Delighted as I was with the concept, I shelved it after drafting the logo, knowing that I could never use it — it’s bad enough embedding someone else’s logo inside your own, but when that someone else happens to be one of the most litigious companies in the gaming industry, you’re going nowhere fast. I forgot about all this until yesterday when I saw my logo draft on my hard disk and felt compelled to completely redraw it. This is the re-draw; since I’d given-up on the idea of it being a logo graphic, I let myself do something much more illustrative this time around.
