I goes up the stairs, I goes down the stairs. I goes up the stairs...

... works me quads, y'know?

I felt like doing an animation, so I did one. I've done walk cycles before, but decided to do something a little more involved this time. Up next: a feature length animated film starring yours truly, extolling the virtues of squirrel dens, cotton handkerchiefs, and the bruised, toric manifests of some Wilmington men. Expect that to hit your local cineplex sometime in mid-December, 2082.

This wasn't actually done in Flash, it was done with Pencil, but Pencil for Windows only exports to swf (or individual frames).

Smaller, colored, GIF version here.

Oh wow, this was submitted a while ago. It's fun to watch. How many drawings did it take you to complete the cycle?

Hmm. Long time ago. I don't rightly remember, and I don't have the source files to check on this computer, but I think it was only around 45 frames.

This is GREAT! Love the turn he has and it definitely has a lot of character to it! And the timing and perspective is great too. Pencil? OOH I must try it! *runs off to play with free programs bc she's broke*

Well, thanks for linking me in your journal. I appreciate that. I may have to go back and play with Pencil again now, since I haven't used it in months and I'd hate to be making bad recommendations.

Wow, very cool. Pencil, you say? How is it, as an animation tool? Me, I've had a little experience with Flash, but I would be excited to find something that was open source and dedicated to animation.

I'm maybe not a great person to ask since I produce less than 100 frames of animation per year. For what I do, which is really short pencil test stuff like this, I like it fine.

I'm really loving this one man. The perspective is spot on from what I can see, almost looks like tweeked rotoscoping. which is a good thing :)
The entire animation is covered in good arcs and even better timing. Awesome shit.

Just out of curiosity, how long did this take you to make?

Thanks.

I'm not really sure how long it took. I'm pretty bad about drawing for fifteen minutes, then reading a comic, drawing for fifteen minutes, then surfing the web for an hour, and so-on. I drew it as a stick figure on one day, then on another day I went back and re-drew it with the lines you see here. And on another day I colored it. As far as total hours invested in actually working on it -- I have no idea.

Shot #1: piece of cake!
Shot #2: no problem.
Shot #3: even easier than before!
Shot #4: ... !crash!

It was muscle fatigue. The alcohol had nothing to do with it. Nothing.
